Wrought Iron Gates: What You Need to Know

Wrought iron gates are the defining gate aesthetic for London's Victorian, Edwardian, and Georgian housing stock. The ornate scrollwork, fleur-de-lis finials, and hand-forged details that characterise period ironwork are a natural fit for the architecture of inner and outer London alike. When done well, a wrought iron gate does not just secure a driveway — it becomes a piece of architectural ironmongery that adds genuine character and value to the property.

Most contemporary gates described as wrought iron are actually fabricated from mild steel, which is the correct material for the purpose. True wrought iron — hand-forged by a blacksmith — is available for heritage restoration projects but commands a significant premium. Mild steel fabrication allows complex decorative profiles to be produced efficiently by skilled metalworkers, hot-dip galvanised, and powder coated to any RAL colour. The standard London specification for corrosion protection is hot-dip galvanising plus powder coat, which gives a minimum 20-year protection guarantee.

Our network includes metalworkers and fabricators who specialise in ornate gate designs for London period properties. They can work from your brief, from photographs of existing railings or period examples, or from architectural drawings. Most provide CAD drawings or 3D renders before fabrication begins so you can visualise the gate on your property before any metal is cut.

Benefits of Wrought Iron Gates

Authentic London Aesthetic

No other material captures the character of a London period property gate like ornate ironwork. Scrolls, railheads, collars, and finials are all achievable in mild steel fabrication.

Virtually Unlimited Design Freedom

Mild steel can be bent, forged, welded, and shaped into almost any decorative form. Matching existing railings, replicating period patterns, or creating original designs are all straightforward for a skilled fabricator.

High Kerb Appeal

A quality wrought iron gate is immediately visible from the street and sets the character of the entire front boundary. Estate agents consistently report that ornate ironwork contributes to first impressions and sale prices.

Fully Automatable

Wrought iron gates work perfectly with swing gate automation — underground motors or ram-arm systems. The weight is the main specification variable; our installers size the motor correctly during the site survey.

The Installation Process

1

Design and Survey

The fabricator visits your property, photographs existing ironwork for reference, agrees the design and decorative programme, and specifies posts, hinges, and any automation requirements.

2

Fabrication

The gate is fabricated in mild steel — cut, bent, welded, and assembled in the workshop. Decorative elements are forged or machined and welded in place. Lead time is typically 4 to 6 weeks for bespoke designs.

3

Hot-Dip Galvanising and Powder Coating

The finished gate is submerged in molten zinc for corrosion protection, then powder coated to your chosen RAL colour. Both steps are critical in the London environment.

4

Installation and Automation

The gate is delivered to site, hung on prepared posts, and automated. Safety sensors, intercoms, and remotes are fitted and commissioned on the same day.

Wrought Iron Gates FAQs

True wrought iron is hand-forged by a blacksmith and has a fibrous, slag-inclusive structure that is more resistant to rust and fracture than cast iron. Mild steel is the modern equivalent used by most fabricators — it is rolled or pressed into sections and welded. For decorative driveway gates, most of what is called wrought iron today is actually mild steel, which is perfectly fine for the purpose. Genuine hand-forged wrought iron is available but commands a significant premium and is mainly used for restoration of historic properties.

What Homeowners Say

We wanted electric sliding gates for our driveway and this site matched us with an installer who came out the same week. The whole process from survey to finished gates took under three weeks. Really impressed with the quality.

Barnet, North London · Electric Sliding Gates

Our Victorian house needed something that looked the part. The installer they connected us with designed beautiful wrought iron gates that everyone on the street has commented on. The intercom and automation work perfectly too.

Richmond, West London · Metal Driveway Gates

We had three quotes through the site and went with the middle one. Hardwood swing gates with underground motors. Six months in and they still look brand new. The 0% finance option made it very affordable.
