Choose the timber and appearance
Start with a sample and a drawing of the complete gate. Compare grain, board layout, frame proportions and how the finish will look beside the house. Ask for the species or modified-wood product in the quotation.

Plan construction and automation
Discuss the dimensions, joints, supports and hardware with the installer. A timber gate can be considered for automation after assessment of its condition, geometry, dimensions, exposure and surrounding hazards. Motor selection involves more than weight alone.
Confirm which work the proposal includes for hinges, posts, power and protective measures. Where you are replacing an existing gate, compare the cost of retaining or renewing the supports.
Agree the finish and care
Choose whether you want a painted finish, visible grain or a changing weathered appearance. Request the coating system and care instructions for the selected timber and exposure.
Confirm the separate terms for timber, fabrication, coating, hardware and installation. A material guarantee does not automatically include repainting or call-out labour. Ask how maintenance affects those terms.
