Choose timber by specification and appearance
Discuss the grain, board layout and finish you want, then ask for the timber species and construction details in writing. Oak and iroko are examples to discuss; confirm availability for the proposed design. Ask about timber sourcing and request a sample before agreeing a finish.
Accoya is modified wood, not a hardwood species. If you compare it with hardwood, compare the complete gate construction, coating and care requirements rather than treating the names as interchangeable.
Allow for your driveway and everyday use
The survey should check the weight and size of the proposed leaves, supports, gradient, movement space and route for pedestrians. Discuss how you will hold a manual gate open and how you will secure it closed. If you want power operation, include a complete-system assessment in the specification.

Finish and maintain the gate
Agree whether you want to retain the original colour with a coating or accept a weathered appearance. Follow the timber and coating suppliers’ instructions for cleaning, inspections and recoating. Site exposure and the chosen finish affect the work required; there is no single annual treatment rule for every gate.
Ask for separate terms for timber, finish, fittings and workmanship. A timber durability warranty does not establish the service life of hinges or motors. The manufacturer Accoya describes care for its own gate material; that guidance should not be applied to a different timber.
Agree the installation scope
