Specify the actual metal
A traditional iron-style appearance may use modern steel, while other designs use aluminium. Ask the quotation to identify the material, sections, joints and infill. Appearance alone does not establish what the gate is made from.

Ask how the finish protects the gate
Request the preparation and coating specification, including joints, edges and areas affected by fabrication. Galvanising, painting and powder coating are different processes; confirm which apply to the proposed gate.
No blanket rust-proof or maintenance-free promise replaces that specification. Ask for cleaning and inspection instructions, repair options and written coating terms. Compare physical colour samples before ordering.
Match the layout to the site
Choose swing or sliding operation around space, levels, supports and daily access. The dimensions and infill affect exposure and the requirements for powered movement. Include protective measures and maintenance access in the design.
If you have old metal gates, consider a restoration assessment before replacement. Listed or protected boundaries need their own checks.
Compare the written scope
Discuss aluminium or other metal options using the same opening and design requirements. The quotation should identify fabrication, supports, groundworks, controls, VAT and reinstatement.
